Advocate for Psychology
Dr.
Miller aspired to be a psychologist most of his life and has dedicated
a significant portion of his career to contributing to his profession.
After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from the University
of Michigan in 1969, he moved to Colorado where he began his career
in mental health. For 17 years he worked in publicly funded mental
health facilities, both in hospitals and at the Boulder County
Mental Health Center. While at the Mental Health Center he became
Team Leader for the Hospital and Hospital Alternatives Team. In
this role he helped establish Cedar House, a model alternative
to hospitalization program. In 1986 he received his Ph. D. from
the University of Colorado, and has been a licensed psychologist
since 1990.
Dr. Miller has experience working with hospitalized teenagers
and adults; providing outpatient therapy for children, adolescents,
adults, seniors, couples and families; conducting and evaluating
psychological testing; doing custody evaluations; leading group
therapy; consulting with organizations; and treating drug and
alcohol abuse. He has expertise in the areas of anger control,
empathic communication, domestic violence, high conflict families,
stepfamilies, depression, and supervision. His current practice
is a general practice which includes the treatment of teenagers
and adults in individual, group, couples, and family therapy,
and the supervision of other psychologists.
He has served as a Board Member of the Colorado Psychological
Association; has served as committee member of the American Psychological
Association’s (APA) Template Implementation Work Group,
which established scientific criteria for evaluating treatment
guidelines; has been a member for 10 years and is currently co-Chair
of the APA’s Interdivisional (39/42) Task Force on Managed
Care and Health Care Policy; is a Board Member of the APA’s
Division of Independent Practice: and is on the Book Review Staff
of the American Journal of Psychotherapy.
In his career Dr. Miller has made over 40 professional presentations
and has authored over 35 publications, which include 6 peer-reviewed
articles and two books. This professional work has focused on
health care policy, ethics, marketing, consumer advocacy, and
domestic violence.
